Student speech law continues to develop through court decisions across the country. Some cases become landmark decisions. Others help show how First Amendment principles apply to new questions involving schools, students, technology, protests, publications, and social media.

If you know of a case or legal development involving student speech, free expression, school discipline, student journalism, or First Amendment rights in K–12 schools, we invite you to share it with us.

Suggested cases may be considered for future educational resources, case summaries, articles, or discussions on Students Speak Freely.

What Types of Cases Can Be Suggested?

You may suggest cases involving:

  • Student protests

  • School newspapers or student journalism

  • Dress codes and symbolic speech

  • Book bans or library access

  • Religious expression in schools

  • School discipline related to expression
