Meet the Founder
Students Speak Freely was founded by Alexandra (Alex) Numbers, a student with a strong interest in free speech, civic education, and the role young people play in American democracy.
Alex created Students Speak Freely to help students better understand their First Amendment rights in K–12 schools. After learning about landmark student speech cases, she recognized that many students may not know how constitutional rights apply in school settings or why those rights matter.
Through Students Speak Freely, Alex hopes to make complex legal ideas more accessible to students, families, educators, and communities. Her goal is to create a resource where people can learn about important court decisions, explore current issues involving student expression, and think more deeply about the responsibilities that come with free speech.
As the founder, Alex writes case analyses, develops educational content, and helps guide the project’s mission to empower students to understand their rights and use their voices thoughtfully.
Students Speak Freely reflects her belief that informed students become engaged citizens, and that young people should be part of the conversations that shape their schools, communities, and future.
A Note From Alex
I started Students Speak Freely because I believe students should understand their rights and the role their voices can play in our democracy. Free speech is not just something we learn about in history or government class. It affects real students, real schools, and real communities.
My hope is that this project helps students feel more informed, more confident, and more prepared to participate thoughtfully in civic life.
